Now retired, our Icon series featured beers that we released for about three months at a time. Each was different from other beers that we brew. Some were iconic of a beer style which was the original concept , but some demonstrated more creative interpretations or melding of beer styles. Most of the Icon releases were from recipes conceived and refined by our brewers. Occasionally a recipe inspired by a winning entry from the Big Batch Brew Bash was released in this series. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau TTB has been asked to clarify the circumstances under which trade buyers 1 may return to industry members 2 , and under which industry members may receive, malt beverage products that have been deemed unsuitable for sale because of freshness concerns without violating the consignment sales provision of the Federal Alcohol Administration Act FAA Act and TTB regulations. TTB Ruling is superseded.
Some brewers assign a coded “pull date” to their products to prevent stale or outdated products from remaining in the market. Brewers who assign pull date coding ask that wholesalers remove malt beverage products based on the pull date and replace them with fresh product. These brewers believe that relying on the wholesaler to monitor the pull date will ensure that only fresh products are in the retail market and that consumers do not purchase stale or spoiled malt beverages.
Brewers who include a “freshness date” on their products believe that such statements allow consumers to make purchasing decisions based on the freshness date. These brewers also assert that freshness dating is a quality control tool that offers some assurance that if the consumer purchases a malt beverage before that date, the product will not be deteriorated or spoiled.
On November 19, , TTB issued Ruling , which clarified the circumstances under which retailers may return to wholesalers, and under which wholesalers may receive, malt beverage products that have been deemed unsuitable for sale because of freshness concerns without violating the consignment sales provision of the FAA Act. Subsequently, TTB has received questions from industry members about whether the holding in TTB Ruling also applies to transactions between a wholesaler and a brewer.
Accordingly, this Ruling modifies and supersedes TTB Ruling and clarifies the circumstances under which trade buyers may return to industry members, and under which industry members may receive, malt beverage products that have been deemed unsuitable for sale because of freshness concerns without violating the consignment sales provision of the FAA Act and the TTB regulations.
TTB Ruling is restated below in its entirety, with only clarifying changes. The Secretary of the Treasury is authorized to prescribe regulations regarding unfair competition and unlawful trade practices involving the sale of wine, distilled spirits, and malt beverage products under 27 U.

People often ask me how I became a brewer and the honest answer is simply that I just like beer. The sheer explosion of flavour made me decide that I wanted to make beer for a living. My family were supportive about me leaving my degree behind and retraining to go down this new path. Both my parents worked for the NHS and were unhappy in their jobs, so they were glad to see me try something I felt really passionately about.
When I was job-hunting, a large craft brewery was advertising an entry-level position, and after a few test shifts I got the job. This took a huge amount of practice, as good beer requires a great deal of precision, care and attention. Mostly, however, I had to clear out the mash tun , which involves digging two tonnes of hot, wet malt from a confined space. After about a year I got the chance to put my own recipe into production, and this is still my favourite part of the job.
